Stock Market VaR
Value-At-Risk is an estimate of stock market risk. For a particular day, VaR estimates the minimum proportion of a portfolio which has a 5% chance of being lost. The portfolio is the total stock market.
For example, if the VaR on a given day is 1.5% then an investor in the stock market (i.e. a total market index fund) has a 5% chance of losing 1.5% or more on that day.
VaR is computed each day using the prior 250 days (1 year) of data. Some economists believe that the VaR trend is more informative than its value
